I've got the drive from one of my daughters Windows laptop that got dropped/destroyed.

It's a Seagate Momentus 5400.4 SATA3 drive and I'd like to salvage the data off of it (my daughter, backup? whats that?)

I'd like to connect it to my Windows desktop externally via USB and like recommendations on what hardware I should get.

TIA

~peter

Newegg is your friend: Computer Parts, Laptops, Electronics, and More - Newegg.com

I tend to stick to hardware that's been reviewed, even if they do offer cheaper alternatives. There's a lot of dirt cheap electronics coming out of China that can be buggy.

Thanks, I knew about Newegg but excuse my laziness, just got out of the hospital and cannot do a lot of anything on my computer thats why I was asking for specific hardware to purchase...

This gets 4 out of 5 eggs on NE. There are items that get 5 out of 5 but the # of raters is low. this one has 1543 raters. Price is not too shabby, either.

Vantec SATA/IDE to USB 2.0 Adapter CB-ISATAU2 - Newegg.com

I have basically the same one, and it's been rock solid for a number of years.

All the techs at the company I used to work for carried them to do drive transfers after swapping clients machines in the field.

You're welcome. I've been through times when I couldn't cope with much of anything and help was always appreciated.

An alternative is, teach your daughter to open a computer case, take the two cables from the DVD drive and plug them into the hard drive. I am making the assumption your desktop is SATA and you have a DVD drive.

Spent over a week in Colonial Hills had to argue my way out of there... At least they had decent WiFi and food there...

You've helped me out in the past on different issues (and my attitude) my respect for you is immense...

Thanks again...
