Because (for most users) the one bad feature of Win8 can be overcome in about 5 minutes for $5 (or free), and there's a long list of good features make the upgrade worth it.

The original vanilla Windows 8 sucks, but Win 8.1 is a lot better.

As for yesterday's conference, the HoloLens live demo looked awesome. I'm thinking that thing won't release until 2017...late 2016 at the earliest...it's definitely still in prototype phase now. If the price is right I think it could be a big success, but I think it'll be quite expensive.

I'm normally the type of person who waits at least a year (or until the first service pack) before upgrading the OS on my PCs. But Windows 10 being free if you upgrade within the first year is tempting. I'll definitely be paying attention to end user impressions.

Windows 8 does indeed suck. Fortunately there are free programs which will ensure you never see the Metro tile interface unless you want to. Ive been using one of those, Classic Shell. since within a few days of getting this PC in December 2012. The desktop behaves exactly like my windows 7 PC at work and I have not seen any of the annoying Windows 8 screens for a long time. From what I am reading Windows 10 is moving in a good direction.

The "Metro" interface gets a bad rap but there are some REAL gems in there.
Although I hardly use them on my PC. OK Never. But on a tablet they are REALLY GREAT apps.
The Sports app? Awesome. The Food app? Incredible.
MS should have not forced Metro on people. I don't think it would have been that strange to have a tablet that, when docked to a keyboard is a old style Windows PC and when undocked flips into Metro. FORCING everyone to use it with 8 was the bad move on MS part.

What is the one bad feature of Win8?

The "Metro" start menu (although some users do like it). Other than that one feature, Win8 is a faster, better version of Win7.

I had Win7 on a computer and liked it all right, but I think Win8.1 is a total mess and not like Win 7 at all.
Why is the start menu called Metro?

All the Panes and needless apps, when one simply needs quick shortcuts. Easily gotten rid of with:

Classic Shell - Start menu and other Windows enhancements

Windows 10: Free upgrade for Win 7 and 8
We'll see what we actually get for "free" when it's been out in retail stores for three months. Until then Win8 machines will be running Classic Shell and Win7 will just stay as they are.
