I was under the impression that a specific copy of the OS software was linked to a specific key, so you couldn't just use some downloaded version with a key that was for another copy, even if it's the same exact version of Windows...

I'm always trying to understand the particular of how this stuff operates.
It is correct though, is it not, that a key registers to your hardware configuration in such a way that if I were to rebuild the contents of my machine, I couldn't use the same copy of Windows for it anymore...right?
I know a lot more about the nuts and bolts than the software and such.

Keys are not tied to specific discs. Any Win7 Pro key will work with any Win7 Pro disc.
Home keys generally DON'T work with Pro discs.
iirc, there was some hack one could do to the Win 7 Ultimate iso from Digital River to make it a universal install disk for any of Home / Pro / Ultimate options. Also, I read someplace that the way Windows 7 Anytime Upgrade worked was that all of the Win 7 installations were essentially Windows 7 Ultimate, but the key code used doe Home or Pro would only enable the features included in Hone or Pro. If you buy the Anytime Upgrade, you are buying a key code that unlocks the features of Pro or Ultimate, but they were already installed on the PC or laptop.
Toshiba restore disks bought from Toshiba cost $30 shipped a couple of years ago. I bought a set for a used laptop that I got cheap on ebay because the hard drive had been wiped.
