I read some articles on how to make the 8.1 screen look more like the W7 desktop and taskbar, but a lot of them say to download a third-party program to make it happen.
Can you set up 8.1 WITHOUT any third party programs, to show the old taskbar?
Yes you can set it up to boot to the desktop. You'll have the taskbar at the bottom. However the old Windows 7 Start menu doesnt exist in Windows 8.1. You still have to install a third party app for that. I use Classic Shell.
I am pretty sure the taskbar is there on the desktop in 8.1. If you go to a store like a Best Buy you can easily check this out. On a PC showing the Start screen with the Metro tiles, tap the left Windows key, this is between Ctrl and Alt on the lower left of the keyboard. This should take you to the desktop. There also should be a Desktop icon among the tiles, but people may have rearranged or deleted them on a store PC.
The Windows Key on your keyboard is the fastest way. Otherwise, mouse down to where the Start button used to be, and you will see a Windows logo. Clicking that takes you into Modern (Metro).
If you press the Windows key in Modern/Tiles it flips back to Desktop.
