I'm an Art/Creative director, I use photoshop, but I have to admit that GIMP is a very powerful free program. If you know photoshop, you will know how to use GIMP.

I learned Photoshop wayback in version 2.5 by just messing around with things. it was much harder to use back then, and the internet was very young, with very little online help. The Manual was more complicated than it should have been.

My advice is get any of the recommended programs, and just play around and see what happens

Gimp is great considering the price but some may find it a daunting task learning how to use it, any editor is going to be little difficult to learn if you are unfamiliar but the UI in Gimp is lacking to say the least. It's overly complicated and even saving an image is not very intuitive since you need to "export" it. I've only briefly used paint.net years ago but I do recall the UI being more like most editors.

Easy Photo Editor Software by Corel - PhotoImpact X3

Photoshop is the standard because pro's need compatibility. A novice or someone like myself who doesn't need to work with others doesn't have that limitation. There is lot of great editors out there like Photoimpact or PaintShop that don't cost a fortune and won't have the limitations of something like photoshop elements. .
Interesting. I've been using PaintShop Pro forever. Last version I have is 8. Corel bought it?

I have used Photo Serif free version for years and I am really happy with it.

I also use Lunapic, Ribbet and Pizap to add effects/text when I want to.

I have GIMP, but never use it!

Geesh, Photoshop is more of a graphics editor. Sure it offers much for photos, but with a very steep learning curve.

Photoshop Lightroom is the choice of most working photographers, because it is fast and relatively easy to use, and it is non-destructive. You can always start over. Latest versions do some neat things, like advanced re-touching, HDR, photo merge. It does not do layers, but I rarely need that.

Remember, easy to use.
