On our third HP laptop. All have been completely trouble free. The oldest was purchased in 2006 and I still use it for an app that I can't update because they insist on $$$$$ to update and it has been on that laptop forever.

Next laptop will probably be an HP.

Lenovo ThinkPad Series (T, W, X) depending on your needs. i3 chip is weak while i5 is suitable for everyday needs. i7 is for serious graphics users. Shopping the Lenovo.com site allows you to pick and choose components, software, extended warranties, etc.. I prefer Windows 7 Pro to Windows 8, and you an equip certain models that way. 15.6 " screen is the seet spot with both larger and smaller screens selling for more money.

One absolute: purchase an on-site warranty you can afford. Some models offer up to 5 years and they really do come to your house or business within a couple days. If you pay, say $300, for that extended warranty, it will have paid for itself with one serious service call.

As a computer tech company owner, I push nothing but Lenovo or custom-built machines.

If you goal is to spend as little as possible, my recommendations will be of no use to you.
