In the short time that I have had experience with iCloud I have found it to be nothing like Dropbox. For example, can you get the URL to your pictures to post them in forums?

No, you cannot.

It's not the same as DropBox.

I am getting more and more disappointed in iCloud. Claims to sync with my iPhoto too but hasn’t. Just about the only thing it did is mess up my contacts on my iphone by “syncing” them.

It does sync with iPhoto. You just have to set it up to do so. It doesn't just happen.
