A retired HP tech instructed me over the phone to look at the DNS settings and had me type in a couple series of numbers in the blanks (sorry, I'm somewhat technically challenged). It seems that the entire process I followed to remedy the computer's repeated certificate issue pop ups preventing accessing websites was to 1. Buy a WD Passport to backup photos and docs, 2. Install Windows 7, and reset the time on the clock that appears on the screen, and, finally type in the IP address. Bingo! The computer works well now. All the advice here, too, was much appreciated as the nearest pc repair shop is 3 hours away. Thank you, everybody!
