I posted here about my beloved 10-year-old WinXP computer starting to die and my reluctance to get a Win8.1 computer to replace it. I did bite the bullet, though, and spent some time learning Win8.1. While I'll never like it as much as WinXP, I'm starting to get on speaking terms with it.
I received so much helpful advice here that I recently decided to read every single page of the COMPUTERS forum for my own knowledge -- just skimming the thread titles and clicking on anything that looks interesting/informational. And what have I learned?
Every single problem that I had with my WinXP,
every single issue that made me think my computer was dying, was due to Firefox bugs -- even the misplaced spaces/letters problem that I posted about on another C-D forum. In fact, I read a thread on Page 55 in which the poster had the exact same problem due to Firefox.
I've been tempted to get my WinXP computer out of the closet and start using it again after re-installing Firefox. But then I'd have to update it with all the bookmarks/emails/etc that I've added to this Win8.1. And all the time I've spent learning about Win8.1 and setting up this computer like I want would have been wasted. Too, I paid $219 for Office 2013 -- it isnt nearly so user-friendly as Office 2003 (in my opinion anyway) but, still, the idea of wasting that kind of money would bother me.
So my advice to anyone who may be in the same situation, and think it's time for a new computer, is to check out old posts on this forum. Or even just read the old threads for your knowledge. I wish I had done so a couple of months ago. (And, yes, I'm aware that my WinXP would have died eventually anyway but I really loved it.
