I also have a Mac (G-4) and, although it's older, it works just fine. I also do the graphic design bit.
Never have owned a PC, don't have any idea of Windows, and don't have virus problems.

In my book, the iMac is the better deal, as get monitor + computer, plus all the Apple Mac software built-in. Also, look at the refurbs to save some cash too. My 24" iMac is such - and have nada problems. Refurbs, unlike off the shelf units (of any manufacture), are individually tested - and sometimes a bonus [s/w and/or h/w] may be included.

For desktops, I usually buy a PC with a high-end processor (for that time) and then heavily upgrade myself after purchase (RAM, hard disk, graphics card, etc.). We have:
  • one custom ABS desktop (and heavily customized since buying) - 2GHz Athlon, 1GB RAM. I think at this point, only the motherboard/chip and the CD-drive are the only things that are still the original ABS equipment -- I've upgraded/added everything else.
  • one Dell desktop (somewhat customized) - 3GHz Pentium, 1GB RAM. Haven't had much time to modify since buying.
  • one HP laptop (work) - 2.3GHz dual-core Intel, 4GB RAM.

I have a desktop and a laptop.
The desktop is one I built and is a few years old now.
Asus K8V SE Deluxe AMD Athlon 64, 2200 MHz 3200+
3072 MB
NVIDIA GeForce FX 5500 (256 MB)
3 Hard drives, 80 gig, 250 gig, and a 300 gig (one is a SATA)
DVD RW
Windows XP Pro SP2

Laptop, purchased and I had to clean off a lot of junk (aka trial software) they loaded that I didn't want:
Mobile, 1600 MHz HP Pavilion dv9000
992 MB
NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150 (256 MB)
93 GB
Also use a 300 gig external hard drive
DVD/CD-ROM
Windows XP Media Center Edition with available Vista upgrade which is sitting in the bag...not sure I will bother.

We also have a iMac 24 and a Linux server (not currently up and running tho) Linux flavor: CentOS. Liz

Don't buy a gateway. Everyone I know of that has used a gateway has had problems.

Get an HP or a Sony, those seem to be the best in my experiences.

(Although i use a custom built)

Dell Inspiron 5150 laptop. Obviously it's a few years old but it has everything I need and nothing that I don't.

I have bought Dell PCs since the mid1990s, although this was my first laptop. I would never go back to a desktop PC again, I'm now too darn spoiled by the laptop's portability!

My first Dell PC was my first Windows machine. Before that, I had IBM PCs that ran DOS.

No desire to ever have a computer that's named after a fruit.
