I thought Microsoft got with the game but I guess they'll never change. Now I know why I like Apple products better.
It isn't SoftwareDistribution\Download in the Command Prompt, but a file in the File Explorer. Search for it in the search box.

I hope I understood you right.

I'm late to the party, but it went smoothly for me. Took about two hours before I was logged in and ready to go.

"What this error means is, your Windows 10 installation folder is unfinished and/or corrupted. Now, how do you fix that?
1. Go into "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download" and delete everything in that folder.
2. Now, run the command prompt as an administrator. Type in "wuauclt.exe /updatenow".
3. Go to your Control Panel > Windows Update and your Windows 10 should start re-downloading from scratch, hopefully without flaws this time."

I got #1 done.
#2 did that but didn't press enter yet.
#3 went to the Control Panel, and it says "Windows could not search for new updates."

Computer does start though, so I haven't crashed it yet. Thanks for the tip emcee squared, got any more suggestions how to solve this?

First understand... I am technologically challenged.

I truly don't understand....

If people had Windows 7, and liked windows 7.

Then comes along Windows 8, which many people (including me) did not like.

So, Microsoft creates Windows 10, which requires "Monkey Motions" to install.

Why not simply continue to offer and use Windows 7, which apparently most people liked?

I just don't get it.

Well, for one thing, most people can get Windows 10 free. I'm guessing there will be a massive amount of people upgrading for that reason alone. But I also think there will be quite a bit of people rolling back to Windows 7. I'm forced to run Windows 8.1 at work. Tried to like it, but I just don't. And unfortunately, since we run Enterprise at work, we can't (at this time) upgrade to Windows 10.

Personally, I am just fine with Windows 7 at home. I don't plan to upgrade, at least not right now. I think I have about a year before I'm out of the upgrade window, so I'd rather sit back and let someone else worry about "working out the bugs".

Because they cannot make money from already sold Windows 7. Windows 8 was not a success. Windows 10 is free upgrade only for the first year. If it gains enough popularity then consumers might start actually paying for Windows 10.

Also another reason is Microsoft wants to push on forward on their vision of one OS for everything - desktop, laptop, tablet, phone, watch, Xbox, TV, etc. I like that vision.

Good Idea. Let them work the bugs, of which there are many, worked out before I try it again. Already downloaded once and in 5 days went back to Windows 7.

Threshold 2 is coming later this year and will be the polished, complete version of Windows 10. I use Windows 7 currently and have decided to wait.

According the WSJ, the upgrade is free through the end of the year.

Well, after a week and about seven failures, Microsoft has deemed me worthy of Windows 10.
Whatever fiddling I did last night must have did the trick. I looked at the screen and it said, "We're ready."

It is more zippy. Everything works, printer works, mouse also. So far so good.
