Sounds like I'm the only with just one computer (laptop). Or only computer geeks come to this forum... I'm no geek so am apprehensive to keep a computer out of warranty.
Nahhh, you are quite welcome here and trust me, there are plenty of novices that come here...
As another mentioned, computers have become disposable items.
A word of advice, please please please make backups of the data on your system. The computer itself is replaceable, your pictures and documents are not.
If you need assistance here is where you can get it...
Desktops: One at primary home, one at the office, and one at the vacation home.
Laptop: One Macbook and one Windows laptop that I carry around depending on where I'm going that day.
How many computers do you have, including all types? (don't count those that are broken or you don't use)
When your compputer's warranty expires, what do you do? Sell, give away, keep...?
1 cell-fone
1 tablet
1 desktop
1 htpc (which used to be a desktop)
1 blu-ray player (which according to lg runs busybox)
2 raspberry-pi's
1 video game console
3 tv's (that are tcp-ip/dlna capable -- not sure what os they run)
1 wifi router (that is tomato os capable)
whats a warrenty ?
edit: whoops, i read the op before other responses. so it seems they didnt mean including all types?; just desktops.

An xp laptop, still runs.
A pre xp laptop, still runs, but formats don't match. I found some old writing files and finally found a way to save them on the win7 machine.
A win seven laptop as backup.
A win seven laptop that I fixed, my main machine.
Do not plan to upgrade any of them to 8 or 10 or above.
A desktop which will be hooked into the tv, win 7.
A tablet which died in a month. Got it free so never bothered to fix it.
A cell/smart phone, but since I never do anything but text and phone calls, maybe listening to music, so I just consider it a phone.
I plan on the next phone being downgraded so I can quit paying for all that download time. Problem is it MUST be NEW. Tired of refirbs which die in six months, even if the next one is free.

Thank you I back up my files with external HD, but quite infrequently, as it's a big hassle. I'm probably doing it a very stupid way: I try to recall what files had been changed, and then just copy those revised files and any new files from computer to external HD. Obviously I could miss some files this way.
What's an easy and efficient way to frequently back up data?
I got one - it has a floppie drive thingie and a place where I can put one of those BUS drive thingies.
