supposedly this is a hoax anyways but i was gonna' suggest unplugging the drives in question and then mount them read-only and try running photorec. (maybe capturing a dd image prior to experimenting with anything)

It's based on the classic Norton Commander, as opposed to things like XTree (the other commercial one) or shareware alternatives like Stereo Shell, ElfTree, PC Valet, FileJet, and friends. I used to do DOS filemanager reviews for a Twin Cities BBS back in the day.

Then also take a look at XYplorer (get the free no install version). It has a slightly more candy-coated toolbar but also some really nice and odd features.
For instance; I like to press the first letter of a file or folder so the explorer automatically zaps to that first file/folder starting with that letter. In the attached screenshot, I pressed the letter O and not only it went down to the first folder name starting with O but it also highlighted all others which makes it very easy to spot/count/etc.
