i had some harmon kardon(hk195) computer speakers that recently crapped out on me, but had awesome sound otherwise. they were pretty old. they had decent bass and could crank for computer speakers. i replaced them with these jbl USB computer speakers that are not even half as loud and i want to return them. i find out now that it is primarily because usb computer speakers are not as loud as the ones with the ac adapters. what computer speakers could i get that would be comparable to my old harmon kardon speakers at a price range of $50-100? i'd like to avoid using a subwoofer as there is limited room for that. i am concerned more about loudness rather than bass, but would like some speakers that enable me to adjust the bass as well.

i was halfway thinking about the bose companion II series 3 but would rather get some input on others first.

This should help. It is a listing of computer speakers sold on Amazon. You may use the filters on the left side to narrow your search results.

Before giving up on them check the sound setting in Windows. Right click the volume icon and select "Sound mixer".

Also check the specific properties of them under "playback devices". Use the "configure" button to set what type speaker sytem it is. Then click the properties button, that will allow give you specific device configuration. Go through the tabs and pay particular attention to marked enhancements or effects as those can affect playback volume.

That said there is not a whole lot of power over USB, it's not meant to power devices that draw a lot.

Check your local thrift stores. You'll probably find 10 sets of HK195's for sale for $5

Mine (new in 1998) are still going strong.

Perhaps one of the wires or connectors has an intermittent problem ? Including the wall wart PS.

You could also improve the sound by adding an aftermarket sound card as opposed to using the on-board audio.
