Do you prefer a desktop or a laptop?

I've always been a desktop guy. I loved the larger screen, full size keyboard and mouse, plus the power. I disliked laptops because they are less value compared to a desktop, have a small keyboard, have a terrible touchpad, and the battery starts to get weak after a few years.

I got a Macbook Pro earlier this year and have really enjoyed it. The touchpad is great, the keyboard is good, and I've learned to adjust to the smaller display.

However, I still find myself sitting at my desk with it 99% of the time. The only time I ever leave the desk is on a trip (once or twice a year), or to print something (printer is across the room). I've been thinking of going back to a desktop because I don't use the laptop like a laptop.

I prefer a laptop with a docking station. Best of both worlds.

I prefer laptops. I like to be portable. If you never leave your desk, I agree. What's the point?

If I'm doing "real" work for my job I prefer a desktop (or in my case, a laptop in a docking station). If I'm just doing casual internet stuff I prefer sitting on the couch with my laptop like I'm doing right now. I'll take this one step further and mention that I generally hate tablets. They are fine for just viewing videos or something like that, but if I need to do any typing, forget it.

I love the structure desktop provides. A set location to get things done. I been craving for it. Laptop just doesn't give that structure feel. But it is convenient to watch tv or do something with half my brain while doing something else on laptop with other half of my brain.

I think I will get docking station when we get bigger place

In truth, I use a combination.

At work, I have two desktop machines and a laptop+dock attached to a pair of monitors and a KVM switch.

At home, I have:

* a laptop I use as a laptop
* a laptop in a docking station I use as a desktop
* a netbook I use as a netbook most of the time
* a netbook I use as a desktop of sorts via a monitor/mouse/mini-keyboard (Rii i8+), and
* a desktop I use as a desktop

That isn't including the media servers or the 8-box LAN downstairs which is mostly dead now anyway. Sad. I loved my IntelliStations.

Those were great machines. Mine lasted for years.

I have a laptop to use when I'm on the sofa or on the road but prefer a desktop. The regular keyboard, mouse and big monitor cannot compare.

They are IntelliStation 6899 Z-Pros. The first Z-Pro model with a handle on the top front. It was fun to bring my all-black IBM systems (even had black IBM branded mice) to my friend's LAN party. Everyone else had beige boxes at that point in time. These days, all eight boxes at his parties tend to be black.
