Are you sure there isn't something else interfering? A 970 SHOULD be able to tear through anything out there today. That is still a very high end card and frankly I'd be ticked off if my 970 wasn't performing today. That was a $500 card ($600??) when it was introduced 2 years ago. Playing Doom 4 on ultra settings with full AA at 1440p, I generally don't stay much above 30 fps. My old card won't go to waste though. I will give it to my brother

Not really. Not at 1440p. The 970 is good at 1080p.

1440p requires 78% more performance than 1080p.

Another option: if you have Windows 10, you can actually match up unlike cards in SLI. In other words, you could potentially use your 970 *and* your 1080 in the same system. I think it's pretty new and only works in a few games so far though.
