Don't have another set of speakers to test with and I'm trying to figure out if it's the old 2-channel Cambridge Soundworks speakers or old Soundblaster Audigy card. Is it true if volume fades in and out (rather than either on/off completely), it's the speakers rather than the audio card? Could it be the wires (connects to the subwoofer, which I've ensured are making good contact)? This happens at random times, whether on local files or on Google Play Music so I'm sure it's not the files. WIN10 PC.

You don't have earphones/headphones to plug and test?

Good call, until now, they were plugged into the mobo's on-board sound jack (for a quick Windows' sound control switch-over) which I hardly ever use so I didn't think of it.
