DOS 6.22 was the best OS Microsoft ever put out (who'd have thunk MS actually put out?)

I don't remember ever seeing a BSOD on DOS!

Not at all.

Up until Windows 98 it was reliant on the DOS operating system. DOS has since been "scrapped" really. The command prompt of today's Windows isn't even a shred of what DOS was.

Yeah I know it doesn't tell you how old it is, but I am thinking it is the early 2000.

You can download puppy linux onto a flash drive. It will then download onto your hard drive and give you the option to start the computer in Windows XP or Puppy. Puppy is small enough to be able to run on old computers that are incapable of being upgraded to newer versions of Windows.
Puppy Linux HomeYou are taking a chance with Windows XP because it is no longer secure.

I know it is not worth the effort. I found it cleaning and didn't think it was still working and tried it.

I do not blame you for keeping it around, I kept and xp computer around for over 7 years after closing a business, then I finally wipe the hard drive and donated the machine itself to a Philippine charity.

Thanks for your info

Immediately run the updates and you'll need to get third party antivirus because MS no longer supports there anti virus for XP. Check device manager after you run the updates to make sure all devices have drivers. You can also check Dell's site to download and install them.

Ok, did you look up the Dell model number or at least the CPU type?

Maybe they can't afford to upgrade.
Or maybe they're running ancient sw on ancient hw and can't upgrade.
You can ask them. For example, I like XP. I run XP on a few machines. I also like Windows 7. I run Win 7 on a few machines. The version I run depends on hardware and software mix.
