Most shops I've known install upgrades one one machine first, and test it with the necessary software.

Regarding compatibility, what problems have people been having? MS seems to update its OS kernel on a much longer schedule than OS updates. Win 3.1 to 95 was a new kernel. 95/98/2000 to XP was a new kernel. XP to Win 7 was a new kernel. I do not think 7 to 8 to 8.1 to 10 involved a new kernel. Am I wrong? It also seems that Win 7 drivers work under Win 10, whereas XP drivers (to my regret - lost a legacy scsi card I needed) do not.

Yes, legacy software can trip up in upgrades, but it depends on how it was coded, especially if it used unoficially documented calls.

I waited until the last day, and pulled the plug and decided to upgrade all my computers in the office to Win 10 from Win 7.

I have used Win 10 for months and like it as much if not more than Win 7 which I believed was the best iteration of Windows to date. As a CPA I was concerned with software compatibility. Also, I was thinking how difficult upgrading my entire network would be. It was a piece of cake on Friday, upgrading the 5 computers which when all said and done were instantly up and running just like they were in Win 7, with Logmein remote still working fine.

If they hadn't stuck it on our computers I don't think many people would have upgraded.

The way they have been pushing it, what do you want to bet they change their minds and offer it free again for a new period of time.

My feelings exactly!

Perhaps around Christmas or New Year Microsoft will open up a window (ha!) with the free offer for about a month.
