Seriously, think of every other online service. It's all improved, much of it vastly. Craigslist, mapping, Yelp, social media, and sure enough City Data. But tech support --- is there any other potentially valuable online tool that has languished this much?

Post in a Microsoft forum, get 2 replies within 6 months, lucky if 1 of them understands you. Just as it was in 1999.

No, I'm not bitter. I'm tired though. Good night.

It costs a lot of money to provide good support, and there is little to no return on the investment. Why help in fixing broken product when there's more profit in selling a replacement?

I'd love to know what post you put up that got no replies.
Those forums are full of 1,000's of replies.
Did you try calling MS? Phone support isn't bad actually. And as Dave said it's not cheap. But we will complain that MS support is in India...

Soooo..
I called MSFT about an issue with Office 365.
Got that handled all right, and we started talking Windows 10.
I said I was a bit disappointed and the support feller says, "Yeah, give it another year or two. They released it a bit early and it isn't really ready."
I mentioned I was disappointed with MSFT abandoning mobile.
He says, "Yeah, I use Android."

I'm not sure I would agree that a web-based forum such as this one is an improvement over something like moderated USENET, where an advanced user was able to do a lot more to sort/filter messages inside their newsreader and make reading large forums a lot easier. But people like using the web, so...

If you want one on one support you will pay a lot. A friend of mine recently had a problem with his computer and Microsoft was going to charge him $199 to troubleshoot. For that price you may as well save your money and put it towards a new computer.

spam killed usenet, not preference for web. I used it a lot before the spam arose, then stopped because the junk was overwhelming.

You want tech support? do some careful googling. and know which sites are good for your level of skill, and which are crap.
