So, my Toshiba died and I bought a new Dell Inspiration at the end of March. Now there is something wrong with the link from the power cord to the motherboard and the upshot is I have to send it to Dell and they will fix it under warranty. Fine. But in the meantime I need a spare laptop - I work from home sometimes and just need a computer. I don't want to spend more than I have to and am just looking for something the will work when my main laptop is down for some reason (while I hope that the is the only time I have to ship it to Dell -- you never know). Any brand suggestions? I really don't want to get another Dell at this point as I'm pretty disappointed in this one at the moment. Any brands I should steer clear from? Thanks.

I picked up a little Asus fliptop that can act as laptop or tablet. Got it at Walmart with the warranty. Cheap, fairly light, screen is a bit small, but it is fine for shlepping around and not worrying too much if it gets broken or stolen. It is NOT a power user's computer - but for checking emails, a few searches and checking news and social media, it is adequate.

spare means cheap, maybe cheapest, but beware of tablet grade processors which will be really slow.

I'd just head to a store like walmart and buy the "special of the day." Heck, if all you do is email, web and simple editing, even a tablet grade processor will work.

I'd worry more about moving data and programs if you don't work on the cloud.

Check these on a regular basis and I'm sure you will find something. I've seen some really good deals, I just don't happen to need one right now.

The Lenovo T430 is great, but the T420 should be cheaper. The X230 is very very much smaller screen laptop - very portable ultrabook.

To make a purchase recommendation request, you'd have to state your budget.

But FWIW, from Laptop Magazine:

I appreciate the input. I can see that I'm already thinking of spending a bit more. I just don't want junk. And I stream a lot of tv shows, etc. When I work from home I use Go To My PC, so I need something that won't be terribly slow.

Any more suggestions or input are welcome.

Thanks.

I don't know of any "junk" out there, since all the components are made by the same few manufacturers, and the assembly by another small set of folks. IOW, almost everything is OEM, where the retailer buys it from someone else, perhaps to the retailer's spec.

For the value sector, which is the bulk of the market, you'll see 15.6 screens, a HDD instead of SSD, and middling battery life. So what? You're using it at home, so who cares if you need to plug it in after an hour, if you save a hundred bucks in the processs? Slower processor? as long as it does video well, and most do, who cares.

These days, with the cost of components being so low, it is easy to over-buy.

Jaypee's post from Laptop Mag is interesting, but be aware that the mag is oriented to the road warrior set, where long battery life is very important, and cost rarely an issue. Asus, for instance, has some wonderful machines, fast, light, great battery life, great screens, big SSD and costing over $1,500.
