While trying to investigate and consider changing some spacing parameters with Word we acquired an unwanted character when we open the program.
Before today we always got a blank page and as we typed letters we'd have the vertical line follow along, not the "character" or "symbol" you see. Any ideas?
That's the paragraph marker. I never use it, so not sure what the benefit is meant to be. On the Home tab, go across to the paragraph group, on the same line that displays the font name. You'll see a little button with the same character displayed. This button toggles that feature on and off. If it's visible when you open Word, you may have managed to save it to your default document. Just click on it again to turn it off.
Can you select the character? If so do that and hit F1 (help key). That may bring up information about it.
We can highlight it but not delete it.

We have an older version of the program. Home and font group and paragraph group we do not see "font name." We do see the marker as seen here near the middle top. Thanks.
You can see in his screenshot, he has marks turned off. Strange.
They are handy in Word Processing when working on documents you are sharing with others.
But yours is turned off. (The button next to the AZ button).
Pawley may be right, you may have it as your default setup.

That is a paragraph marker. If you look at the menu, there is another one up there that looks just like it. If you click it, it will turn off the viewing of characters in the document.
That said, if you plan on doing much work in Microsoft Word of any age for business purposes, you should probably get some kind of manual.
We got it this way.
Click the Microsoft Office Button, then Word Options > Click Display.
Under Always show these formatting marks on the screen, clear the check boxes for any formatting marks that you do not want to show in your documents at all times.
That specific marker was on the list and checked so we removed that check and re-opened the program and the thingy was still there. We then removed the check mark from "always show these." and it no longer appears on the screen. It's a great program but the number of settings have to be in the many hundred's.
We got it resolved before the last two comments were posted as well as #5 and #6 were likely being posted as we got it. Thanks.
