I can use the computer lab at school to submit in Visual Studio but I'll most likely be looking for a mac friendly C++ compiler. (Tho there seems to be a mac version here https://www.visualstudio.com/en-us/v...mepage-vs.aspx unless I'm missing something?)
Visual Studio Code (the editor listed with Mac / Linux support) is fairly new, and is a light weight editor that's primarily targeted at web development (think Notepad++ on steroids). It's a long way from being a fully capable IDE like Visual Studio.

On top of that, the C/C++ extension is still in Preview, and is extremely limited in capability.

But it sounds like you don't really need VS on a daily basis, so as long as you can keep your projects VS compatible you should be good to go.
