Not sure if this is the right forum, but here goes:
Eight months ago, we had problems with our computer so my husband called a Microsoft Help Line phone number he found online. (He swore it was legitimate, and he is much more of a "techie" than I am.) The person he spoke with was almost certainly a native-born American (no accent of any kind) and was very helpful. After about three hours of connecting our computer with theirs, the problem was solved, and they asked for payment of $299.99, which we were glad to pay, and we gave them our checking account number and a check number. They said that someone would call to verify that this was a legitimate charge that we approved; and they did and we did.
The reason I am writing is that this check has never been cashed. We even e-mailed the payment company handling the payment (check2pay, which I also checked out and it is legitimate) a month after the fix saying the amount was never deducted, after we again confirmed this with our bank. However, we received no response to our e-mail, and so for eight months, we have been carrying this deduction forward. We have never received any collection notices or anything like that.
So now I am wondering what, if anything, we should do or if there is anything to worry about. (Btw, we have not had any computer hacking problems since the fix, although we have been notified about three times since then through our Anti-Virus software of an attempted hack, which has been about average for us.)
If it's been 8 months, I'd stop payment on the check. The company will contact you pretty quickly if they try to deposit it after that and it comes back.
