We do not get that window (which lets us choose what we would like to do with the photos). This photo shows what we get with our Vista system. The three systems with Windows 7 do not get this window and we have not been able to find out why.
Howard, if you have a problem and it's veered off in slightly different direction it's usually not a good idea to start a new thread. It may not be relevant to you but some of that information may be relevant to someone else.
In any event if it hasn't already been suggested that camera may need specific driver and/or Windows is using wrong one.
Go the manufacturers site and look up the model. They will usually have driver only download and/or full installation download. Download the driver only one if they have it, the full install is usually just a bunch of extra useless software. That file is usually a .exe that will launch an installation window and just follow the directions.
If it's self extracting .exe and creates a folder there will usually be file called setup.exe in the folder.
You can also go to device manager and see if you can find the camera listed, it's probably going to be under drives. Double click it and on the drivers tab select update driver. Choose the selection for browse my computer, choose the folder from the download and select next.

What happens if you insert the card directly into reader if you have one?
Start > and type AutoPlay in the search window. It should appear at the top of your list. Click it.
Camera plugged in and turned on.
Now scroll down to the second gray line which to the far left will say devices. Under devices you should see the name of the camera listed with a drop down box next to it.
Set the drop down box to the Windows 7 Live photo program downloads using canon camera and click save at the bottom of the screen.
Now power the camera OFF. Disconnect the camera from the computer. Wait a couple of minutes ensuring your camera is OFF and connect the camera to the computer. Press the PLAYBACK button to initiate the connection to your computer. The Windows program you selected should open and provide you the option to download your photos.
Another option...Camera plugged in and turned on.
Start > computer > right click camera > download pics
