Update: it worked! TY so much.

I lost sound on it last nite but regained today, hmm? So I guess its ok. It is light Lubuntu 16.10 as a friend here advised to try. I'll keep you posted as to how it does.

Glad you got it working. Lubuntu is especially good for older computers.... very light on resources.

16.10 is not a long term service distro. If you want updates/maintenance for a long time (2021), you want to download the 16.04 iso. I have 32bit 16.04 on three computers. You can download the iso from here:
32-bit PC (i386) desktop image For almost all PCs. This includes most machines with Intel/AMD/etc type processors and almost all computers that run Microsoft Windows, as well as newer Apple Macintosh systems based on Intel processors.

I would also suggest that you try Linux Mint. It's an Ubuntu derivative and it 's easier to install and use than Ubuntu (I think). Also supported until 2021. Here the link to get 32bit Mint:
