My Lenovo W530 was upgraded to 1TB mSata [will multi OS boot], two 2 tb Hard drives, 32GB DDR3L memory, and I modded the CPU to a 3940XM. My Modo 10v2 software renderer is CPU dependent, so this laptop is awesome enough!

Look at these scores for CPU Passmark Speed Ratings: PassMark Intel vs AMD CPU Benchmarks - High End
i7 6700HQ - 8120 pfft! PassMark - Intel Core i7-6700HQ @ 2.60GHz - Price performance comparison
i7 3940XM - 9372 PassMark - Intel Core i7-3940XM @ 3.00GHz - Price performance comparison
i7 4980HQ -10,043 PassMark - Intel Core i7-4980HQ @ 2.80GHz - Price performance comparison
i7 5950HQ - 10,892 PassMark - Intel Core i7-5950HQ @ 2.90GHz - Price performance comparison

-- Just take a quick notice that Intel CPU's are hardly getting any faster for laptops, but they are getting more power efficient and less build size [14nm process vs 28nm process].
I wish my laptops have those CPUs. What I have is a mid-range CPU with a score of around 4,440. High-quality converting on handbrake takes about 6 hours for a 50 minute 1080 video.

Keep in mind that the big score you see ("8029", "4440", "9372", etc.) is a multithreaded test. So that can be a little deceiving.
For instance, my Opteron 6726 has a score 9011. If you like at the tiny text below the number it says: "Single Thread Rating: 1031" Compare that to say, a modern day budget CPU like the i3-6100's single thread rating: 2104. An over 100% increase.

So you will find that many consumer programs will run better on the i3 than the Opteron because the program can only create 1 or 2 threads. If the program could create 16 threads, the Opteron might smoke the i3, but with the way things are, it seems you are better off with around 4-8 threads and a higher single thread rating than multithread.

What I was really getting at with that is that even with a low rating, the CPU could be fine.

OP: You think $1,000 is a "cheap laptop". We aren't talking abotu Apple here. $1,000 buys a great laptop. Almost gaming level. In fact, this:

https://www.amazon.com/K501UW-AB78-1...n%3A2289792011

will chew through video editing like churning hot butter.

You want: i7 + SSD drive and an onboard video card to really get the most out of editing.
But you'd want the quadro k2000 card in your W530. But I admit, it's a kinda outdated workstation card.

Just look at the ebay listings for "Lenovo W530" and most of the under $1000 listings blow away this Asus. These are used heavy duty workstations, though. That Asus only with a 512GB ssd is more like an ultrabook.

512GB ssd is not enough; my Lenovo 900's 1TB ssd is not enough for me either!

There's no need to store, docs pics or videos on an SSD. You run your OS and all programs from your SSD but store everything on a platter. That's what a lot of folks do anyway.

Second the Sager that JTE posted in that last post. Sager = quality and that is a great laptop he posted. AND free shipping? Get it OP. NOW.

Never used Sager myself, but I've heard many great things and the specs of that last laptop are not bad. Especially for 1080p gaming.

Seen in person once, never owned. Sager and Falcon Northwest are the cream of the crop IMO.

You only need an onboard video card if your software supports GPU rendering. Even then you need the right GPU.
