Asus eeePC 701
This ultra mobile mini notebook has really got me thinking. I'm looking for something like this and it looks pretty damn good. Low cost, good basic capabilities - email, internet, word processing, excel and some multimedia all in a tiny package that doesn't become a burden when travelling. The browser is Firefox so it's fully functional unlike an iPhone that has a miniscule screen and a handicapped browser. And thanks to the SD card and USB I can buy more storage if needed and add functionality if necessary

I got to play with this at Google HQ in January - its fantastic! Running Mandriva + KDE, its quick, light, and the battery lasts a decent bit (could be better - but the batteries are pretty small!)
I'd like to pick one up for myself, but havent found an excuse yet

yes, I would like to get one too but I want to play with it a bit before I do. Considering I paid $350 for my iPod, paying $400 for a full fledged computer is quite appealing!

I bought a refurb Nokia 770 six months ago (actually a pair of them @$140 apiece, one for myself and the other for my wife), and I haven't looked back. The bundled Opera browser isn't bad, and my wife uses Pidgin with it for chatting, but the neatest thing I've done with it so far is control some of my PCs downstairs via VNC.
The eeePC is a nice little unit from what I've seen, but why pay all that money when you can use a stylus instead for a lot less?

Now would not necessarily be the best time to buy. New models of eeePC with a 9" screen were introduced this week and will go on sale next month.

awesome. If they are releasing the 9" model next month then I will wait for that. I do want 1 GB onboard memory though. The storage is less important to me since I can always use the SD card. $630 is not too shabby, about the same as a Garmin 650 navigation device!

No and since it runs Linux and has no optical drive, you'd likely have a hard time using it with a connected GPS.

Their's going to be a huge battle on in the next few months as many computer manufacturers are releasing their own solid state mini laptop after the success of the eee. A UK manufacturer has said it intends to release one for under $200 in the next few months!
