Sharing how? Which video compression method you use depends on what you're looking for in the end. Each method has its up sides and down sides, depending on your final outcome.

For putting on photobucket,or possibly putting on youtube or on a forum. And for less space used on filing on disk.
I need a user friendly program that will compress video yet retain most resolution.

from a camcorder though I just bought a new hi-def Canon waiting to arrive so I'll need to learn it first and see what kind of file sizes it makes.Windows Vista.

I don't know what applications currently work with Vista, I don't use it. someone else will be able to help there.
Your new Canon is going to output either .dv or .hdv files, and you will then need a program (which will likely come with your Canon anyway, although basic), to copy it to the computer. From there, the files will be large. VERY large. You will need to find something in the file menu - Export (or something like this), which will allow you to reencode to other file formats. The best format for Youtube (and in general for wide usage and decent compression), you will want to use an output that is set to MPEG4 with MP3 audio.

OK I have a Canon HG10.It is in AVCHD format.I must say it is stunning quality but hard to work with.I have been researching what program would be best for editing and it seems Pinnacle Ultimate 12 seems like the best thing.Although Im not sure if my computer has the speed to use it,I may have to upgrade.
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz or higher for 1440x1080 AVCHD editing
Intel Core 2 Quad 2.66 GHz or higher for 1920x1080 AVCHD editing
Pinnacle Studio 12
Unless you have better advice?I need one that will compress for sharing on the net and one that I can easily splice and edit the scene to get rid of unwanted parts.
I may just go get a $300 Canon Mini DV camcorder if it becomes to complicated.

Encode in H.264, upload to Vimeo, Video Sharing For You for sharing -- much better site than almost anything out there (you can upload HDV).
