I am going to replace my hard drive, I didn't make a recovery disk. Anyone done this? How did you restore Windows? I have downloaded Installation media to a USB stick from the Microsoft site and that is the plan.

When you install windows it should activate without any issues, that is the first thing to check. Windows install and update should install most if not all of the drivers. Go to device manager and check if there is anything with ! before it windows does not recognize.
Manually installing them is best route because there may be some drivers Windows will install generic drivers. I have an HP15 laptop and I don't recall actually installing any drivers.
It works, but is generally very slow and ocassionally gives an error message of "no operating system found"
When I run the hard drive test, it always fails, the"short DST check". When I ran the test by Western Dig, it found a bad sector, attempted repair and it failed.

When it decides to work, do you attempt to make Restore DVD's?

I started the process, but It said I needed 32 gb available and I didn't have a usb stick that large available. Is that a better approach than downloading from MS? If so, I'll go get a 32 gb stick and attempt to create a restore.

I bought a 32 and have successfully downloaded the Recovery Drive. I won't get the new hard drive till next week. This laptop was my wife's machine and it has been frustratingly slow for a
good while. I bought her a new Dell and was going to scrap the HP 15, but I decided to see if I can fix it. If I am successful, it will be my dedicated financial machine. Online banking and occasionally , a stock transaction are the only times it will see the internet.
Thanks for the advice and help.
