I agree that it's stupid. I think the only thing you can do is unfollow the person if you don't want to see what they're liking or commenting on. Also keep in mind that they can see your activity too whenever you like or comment on a public post.

I agree this is the most annoying thing about FB right now. I really try to keep Facebook as a way to stay in touch with friends and family and for some lighthearted entertainment. A couple of friends and family members spend a lot of time posting on political threads and I get sucked into them when "so and so commented on this post". It wasn't until the other day though that I had a "friend" mock my like on a very serious post. I haven't really unfriended anyone until now - hid their posts maybe - but mocking me went too far. So, she's gone, but now I just don't feel like having everyone follow everything I do, so either I cull my friends list or quit posting altogether.
