I have an old Lenovo with Windows 7. About once a month it throws off another piece of the hinge mechanism and now I am truly in need of a replacement. A year ago I bought an Acer but it was so loaded with advertising crap that I instantly hated it and have never used it despite its $1K pricetag. So I have been holding the lenovo together with bulldog clips. I also could not transfer my files win7 to win10. The bestbuy guy recommended an external hard drive to which I transferred out of win7 but it would not talk to the win10 on the Acer.

So now my question is, what is a nice clean operating system and computer for a retiree who has used computers since the early 80's but doesn't like a lot of fussy bells and whistles? I would like to store photos, run excel and word, have a snipping tool, add photo software, stream some netflix or whatever, just some basics. And I would like a lap top that doesn't fall apart if you set it on your lap. And what is the best and cheapest way to reload my old data? I have an even older computer that has files and photos I would like to upload.

Some people say I might enjoy switching to an Apple product, but then how do I access my windows created files?

Why don't you uninstall the annoying programs off the Acer? I had to spend a while doing that, and I'm happy with the results.

My mac can open any file I make on my PC. Pages and Numbers can read and create Word and Excel documents. In fact, my biggest problem with Mac word processing is that I often forget to save it in .docx format and accidentally send a PC user a file they can't read.

If watching movies is important to you, look for something with a full HD display (1920x1080). Otherwise, nearly anything you can buy will meet your needs. Lenovo, Acer, Dell, HP, Asus are all good brands.

Just uninstall the crapware and use a good uninstaller. Revo is free and removes all traces.

As for the laptop, I suggest checking this site on a regular basis.

I have a Dell Studio series, 17" screen from eBay for under $300 Christmas 2015. It came with W7 Pro. Works like a charm and has a backlit keyboard.
Quick search fins them for under $200 now.
BTW, hinges are not impossible to repair if you are any good.
