Wow, I get something completely different.

Settings/Apps/Default Apps/

Scroll down to Choose default apps by file type

Scroll down to

.doc, .dochtml, .docm, .docx, docxml, .dot, .dothtml, .dotm, and dotx all show Word 2016

So you see a screen like the attachment?

What happens when you click on any of the "WPS writer" icons?

You should have a pop-up offering to let you change the default to Word 2016, or to select one online.

When I clicked on one of "WPS writer" icons, "Choose Word 2016" appeared. I clicked on it.
Nothing happened. WPS is still the king. Do I reboot?

You might reboot.

You might also uninstall Kingsoft WPS Writer app from your computer, leaving just MS Word for all its defaults.
If you don't want to use it, get rid of it.
I would get rid of it.

Then you should see something like this, although it will show "Word 2016" rather than "Maps" as the default app:
