I've always found eBay better to shop for electronics because there is more visible competition, which drives the prices down. I picked up a really good Acer laptop for under $600 from there over 2 years ago and it's still going strong. I do tend to only buy Acer when it comes to most products though, it's a brand I'm completely loyal to because it's never failed me.

Same here!

Low quality components.

For example, over the years I've dissected many of their computer monitors which always had very junky branded blown caps.

Check out dellrefurbished.com. They frequently have big (like 50% or so!) sales. I've bought several laptops from them for maybe $300-400 delivered. I'm typing this post on a Latitude E7440 I got for around that. It's relatively small and light, full 1080 display, real CPU. I put some extra RAM and an SSD in it, and it's a great little kickaround general purpose device.

I've loved using thinkpads since way back in the 90's, starting with the 700C.

If you haven't already bought, consider if you want to pay for the trackpoint (that little pointing device in the middle of the keyboard). I wouldn't have any keyboard without one, but if you won't be using it, you can probably buy a less expensive thinkpad.
