My computer came with a year of McAfee protection. McAfee has been warning me that it would expire, so the day it was supposed to expire, I installed Avast.
Now, as expected, a McAfee notice pops up saying my subscription has expired. But when I open McAfee, it does a quick scan (or pretends to) and assures me that all my McAfee protection is on (virus and spyware, McAfee firewall, and McAfee web protection). "Your computer is protected," it tells me at the bottom of the box.
I'd like to uninstall McAfee, but I also want to make sure Avast works and that McAfee isn't giving me some free benefit that Avast doesn't.
Just dump McCafee. Avast does work. The free version has a few features missing that McCafee has, but what it does have is much better. You can add on features if you pay for it. I don't bother. I just use the free version.

I've always dumped McAfee on day 1. We use Windows Defender and we have never had a problem. I have used Avast years ago and it was ok.
Keep in mind, which anti-malware product is best, changes each year as everyone tweaks and 'improves' their product, so 'best' is a moving target. There are several websites that keep comparison charts, check them out.
It's well recognized that you should have only one layer of each (virus, malware) protection. IE: one anti-virus + one anti-malware. Multiple anti-viruses can get in each other's way, slow down or even lock-up your system. So you should not only uninstall McAfee, but also do a bit of research to see if the standard uninstall process is 100%, or does McA leave residual bits n pieces. (Norton was infamous for this, to the point where they for pressured to issue an additional utility that would get the remainder, after their uninstall process).
I used to love Avast (free) up until about a year ago, but now it's a bit of a drain on performance and/or bandwidth. Some of the add-ons it comes with don't help either (that and the constant nag pop-ups). Still good though, but I've moved onto Avira.
As others have said, there's plenty of fluidity in the AV marketplace
