I regularly used my I-Mac from fall 2009-fall 2017 without any issues. All of a sudden, the screen went dark and I smelled a burning smell. What are the chances of repairing this? Is it cheaper to buy a new one?
I have a 27-inch late 2009 iMac that I bought new in July 2010. It was my work computer, used daily for graphics work as well as most personal work (though I also have a MacBook). In other words, my primary computer.
In early 2015, the fan was running frequently, it seemed hot, and one day, the screen went gray and nothing could boot it out of its malaise. I took it in to an independent repair shop (not Apple) and they diagnosed a problem with the motherboard and a fried hard drive. (Can't remember exactly what as I cannot put my hands on the paperwork right now.) I do know the hard drive was replaced as the old one is still here in a box waiting for me to take a hammer to it. I paid in the neighborhood of $400. I've had no further trouble with it.
Considering the original price of the machine and that here I am with a fully functioning iMac three years later, it was well worth it. I have since retired and am not using it to generate income, but it's still my "daily driver."
If it goes blooey again, however, I'll leave it to some enthusiast/hobbyist to do with it what they will.
Been using a 21.5" screen 2009 iMac for editing photos, and haven't had a single issue with it. I installed all the RAM possible (18GB) with RAM modules purchased from "crucial.com," and just a couple of weeks ago I replaced the 1TB internal hard drive with a "crucial 1TB SSD."
Also have a late 2010 13" MacBook Pro that has been working daily and without a glitch. I installed new RAM modules just like the iMac, and replaced the 256GB internal hard drive with a Samsung EVO 500GB SSD. Plan to use both as long as they continue working as efficiently as they have so far.

It wouldn't hurt to get an estimate on the repair cost. But it might be cheaper to just buy a replacement. 2009 iMacs are selling for about $150 - $200 on eBay or Craigslist.
5 years is about the effective life of the ones I've had.
