Users of Win7 & 8.* should not have this false sense of security.
Unless you're vigilant about these Win 7 & 8 updates, I think Microsoft slipped in their "spyware" in there too. Or as Microsoft calls it: "diagnostics and telemetry tracking service". A google search would yield several articles covering this. But relatively easy to uninstall them.
The bigger danger is Microsoft patching security holes in Windows 10, but not in Win 7 & 8.*. Hackers can identify what was patched in Win 10 and identify the weak points in the older Win7 & 8.
I say, either jump to Linux for a bit more control over your privacy. .....
Or go full bore and embrace Apple, Microsoft, Google's Chrome OS and even Amazon .... and give them all your personal data they want!
You CAN turn off the updates by filling up your drive until there is no room for them.
This would stop Windows in its tracks, since it needs free space to run. Rather than filling the HD up, just leave the machine off. That will avoid updates!

Nope. I've got one that has been whinging and moaning for updates for over a year now. The big updates take an insane amount of space, and there is plenty left for Windows to operate "normally." Every few hours, it'll try to take control to do an update, choke, and bring up control panel or a microsoft support window in a browser. Close those and continue. I knew when I bought the computer that I was never going to use it for anything mission critical, so I just ignore it. If someone wants to try to hack over a slow satellite connection to access it, when there is nothing of value on it, whatever.
And, yes, it works in Windows 10 home and I've done it. Got no updates for probably most of a year while I was running on my EOM HP-loaded hard drive. Things run so much smoother with my new drive (without all the added HP garbage) that I haven't yet felt the need to turn them off. But I could and would if/when I want to.
