My sister bought a Dell laptop and she decided to add a password to log on and now can't remember what she used. She called Dell and was told that it would cost $189 for them to help her with it and has yearly guarantee expired last month.
Is there anything that can be done short of having to pay them that enormous amount. It has Windows 10 and luckily she saved all her work on a flash drive.

I thank you for your counsel. She has Windows 10 and she downloaded what you recommended and went on the youtube link but she gets this instead of what it says in video:

underneath it says

Load Legacy Option Rom (Disabled)
I did the same thing, I changed the password on my laptop the night before I moved and had the laptop in storage for 2 months and of course forgot the new password... luckily I had backed up all my files right before shutting it down that last night. I took it to Best Buy and they changed me I believe about $89 to reformat and reset the password. That was cheaper than Dell would charge and cheaper than buying a new laptop.
Thank you everyone, nothing worked so she has decided to buy another computer instead, she said it doesn't make sense for her to pay $189 to fix this one when she can get a more modern version for a little bit more $.

You don't need to buy a new computer because of a lost password.... Do a Google search on Dell Recovery Parttion. At the very least you should be able to restore it to exactly how it came when she bought it.
If there is files on the computer you wish to recover first then it gets a little more complicated but not un-doable, do not run the recovery options until you recover them first. I can offer some advice on that if you need it.

No.. It does not make sense to spend $189 to fix this issue. If she purchased another, this computer can be easily fixed. Fix it and sell it on CL for at least $100. Most of the methods for getting around the password will involve having a 2nd computer to get access to software tools (if one doesn't have it already).
