I took my Dell laptop to the repair shop because, even though the power cord was connected, a little message above the power-plug icon read "plugged in, not charging." The guy at the shop said I was using a "cheap made-in-China" cord & transformer; he plugged in a Dell-branded cord -- and to my surprise, the icon changed to "charging." So the problem was easily solved, but I can't understand the reason: why would a brand-name power cord work, when another cord didn't?? Btw, I tried several different cords before I took the computer to the shop, and the same thing happened with all of them -- the "plugged in, not charging" message.
Likely reason is that the AC adaptor doesn’t out out as many watts as the OEM Dell one. For example, if the OEM puts out 85w but the replacement 60w it may be enough to power the laptop but not charge while on.

I’d say that’s likely. As another said, if it gets really warm it is probably working too hard.

Hmmm might be something wrong with it also..... Have ya tried putting it in and wiggiling it?? (Maybe its loose in the connector)

You have to aware of the knockoffs that overstate what they actually put out.
