It used to be that emptying the recycle bin and doing a defrag cleaned up just about everything. For quite a while now, that still leaves a LOT of crap. TEMP folders, places where updates live, browser caches - and even in some cases HIDDEN caches of browsers, including histories, swap files and other junk are more difficult to find and dump. Also, older drives will cordon off sections of a drive that have become unreliable. At five years, you should be able to still clean most stuff up. Add three to five more years and maybe not.

If you do a purge don't empty the recycle bin for at least a few days. If you discover you accidentally deleted something you need it can be restored from there easily. After you empty it it becomes a bit harder.

Download a free cleaner like ccleaner. You can set the cleaning to overwrite the files (I use 3 times and have use 7 in the past) which makes the deleted files difficult to reconstruct. It will also clean much of the crap the harry mentioned.

+1 recommendation for ccleaner
You can set it to search deep for temp and unneeded files if you're trying to get some extra space.
And you can set it so it deletes with a wipe that is as secure as you want, depending on the time you'll allow.
(Deep or multiple wiping can take a LONG time, like many hours).

I am,85,years ago on Bell split I was moved to AT&T information systems as a data tech,Peters Principle, promote to the level of ineptness.I have never had the interest in computers, restored three 65 mustangs, fastback, covertible and coupe from ground up.
I do have ccleaner but am afraid of removing maybe what I should not remove.
To do this cleaning what should be checked?
By accident saw two files six miles long with places I visited and seemed to have some old email in it.
Thank you for the start, easy for you but not me.
