Yea, you would need an attached external camera to do it the way you really want.

Holy cow!

If you want to take photographs, why don't you just use an actual camera, optimized for - wait for it - taking photographs????

I have been using the tools associated with several professions and hobbies for nigh onto 50 years and I have not yet found a purported all-purpose tool that works half as well as a dedicated tool, in any field.

If you want to take photos, use a camera. If you want to talk on the phone, use a phone. If you want to use a computer, use a computer.

I do have a 2016 Dell laptop with a camera installed and I am running Windows 10 latest edition. I want to take scenery photos from my balcony outlook. How do I do that and view the image at the same as I am aiming like the viewfinder on a handheld digital camera?

Reading is difficult.

No, reading's not difficult, it's getting people to think outside the "computer as the solution for everything" box that's difficult.

If you want to take photographs and your camera is "on the fritz" I respectfully suggest having the camera repaired (if that's possible) or replacing it, for best results.

You could even go crazy and pick up a K1000 and a couple rolls of 100 speed Fujicolor and learn something new!

99.9% of the time my phone is perfect for all the photos I need. I don't need to lug around my DSLR.
Thanks for... adding nothing to this discussion. I'm sure OP is aware she could go buy a camera.

If you had a dedicated camera before then I'm afraid you're going to be disappointed by the picture quality. Yes it is a camera but it's really more of a webcam, many with only 720p resolution or 1080p. 1080p is only about 2 megapixels. Even a point and shoot camera from that year would be a night and day difference. If you want at least decent pictures but don't want to spend a lot then I'd suggest picking up a used PnS camera. Shouldn't be hard to find one under $50.

That's truth. Although I don't think OP intended to use it as a camera. Just for a specific shot or 3. It's be nice if OP would y'know... chime in.

Am I missing something here?

The laptop camera lens will be pointed away from me toward the scenery. i cannot see if I like how the picture is framed in the lens before I take the photo because there is no view finder.

I guess I will have to buy a stand alone camera or cam.

Take a look through this list. It should be sorted by low to high price.

Be careful as some are used.
