I'm beyond my McAfee free trial with my new Win 10 machine, and am now getting badgered to renew their protection. And so I'm wondering, has anybody here renewed their protection, and is it worth it to have McAfee in addition to Windows Defender? I believe Leo Laporte has said that it's not, but i'm wondering if anybody here has a differing opinion.

I personally haven't run anything but Defender on multiple machines here for several years, and haven't had any issues.

I'd uninstall it and move on.

McAfee is the last piece of software I'd ever put on a computer.

Delete (uninstall) it and be done with it.

Agree, Windows defender is all you need. Type defender into you search box (lower left corner). Be sure it is turned on and the fire wall too. McAfee has probably turned defender off.

Google AV test. This is a site that provides data on the effectiveness of various products. You'll notice that all tools are bunched fairly closely between protection, performance and usability. So strictly comparing Windows vs. McAfee, it's probably not worth the money.

But also understand the limitations of AV. Like any security tool, there is not magic pill that fixes everything. Just as helmets, air bags, seat belts, etc. are all great safety devices, but none of it stops you from getting into an accident.

No. First thing I do when I get a laptop with a bunch of preloaded bloatware is get rid of it.

I switched my 40 office computers to Defender from AVG 3 or 4 years ago.

I had 3 or 4 issues with viruses using AVG for 5 years.
I have had 0 since switching to Defender.

Whatever you do, most experts highly recommend running only one AV program. I've switched to Defender on all my machines.

I also note that it's been years since I had a virus alert. The bigger problem seems to be poisoned websites through spam links. With safe browsing (and tools built into browsers) you would have an additional layer of protection.

Firewalls are a different story - just look at logs sometime. Fortunately, most routers are also effective firewalls (anyone know of exceptions?) and Windows firewall is decent too.

I do like the McAfee Web Advisor -- is there a Windows Defender version?
