I have an HP Pavilion g6 from 2011 that I would really like to save because I like Windows 7 ...and hate anything after it.

My error was "90B" detected system fan failure.

I looked at a few youtube how to videos, so I might be ok.

...but, always best to ask just in case.

Any pitfalls, recommendations, tips?

We had one of those, and it would often shut down due to overheating, without any error message, with the fan running. I did once take it apart and replace the hard drive, when I got a message that it was soon going to fail, but for the heat, we always kept it up on blocks about an inch above the table/desk and that solved the problem.

As no one except Hemlock140 has decided to chime in (and, while his advice is good, it isn't about this particular question), I will just say that since you are already inside of it, you should get a brush (I use a cheap paint brush) and a can of endust for electronics, or some other compressed air spray, and clean as much dust out of it as you can. Be sure to take short shots with the compressed air, as the can gets real cold, and I don't think you are wanting to use it as freeze spray.

Of course, those are things you probably already knew...
