So I'm hunting for a new laptop, I know my specs decently, but money is tight (college kid) and I don't want to make a mistake.
Anyways, my current laptop is breaking because it wasn't very sturdy, the paneling started to chip and now the entire thing is falling apart (wear and tear from just carrying it around on my back constantly. I'm looking for some combination of this
-Some light gaming abilities. I'm not looking for much, but just to run some really easy games when I can (things like Panzer Corp or FTL) the regular Integrated Graphics card is fine. Not the biggest priority, but would like something I can do on the bus etc
-Durable, like I said, my current one is breaking apart at the seems and I haven't done too much to it (not to say I couldn't have treated it more gently, but I haven't dropped it or anything)
-Price range. I don't have a concrete one, but cheaper the better. Like I said, college kid who makes a little above minimum wage.
-decent battery and not being huge would be a plus. But isn't critical.
I know these are all the big points that get repeated. So in short I'm looking for a good utilitarian laptop that runs all the generic college applications. Thanks!
Bus I'd suggest 13" laptop. I'm rocking a 15" again, and while I love the extra screen real estate it's simply too large to use on a bus. If you can get one of the seats that face sideways rather than forward (for buses configured for more standing room/handicapped priority spots) or the very back on some buses. Otherwise forget it.
Dell XPS 13 is an easy choice, but not cheap. An older 7th gen will run around $800 and the current one over $1,000. Asus Zenbook 13 for $750 or Dell Inspiron for around $650 are other choices. Cheaper than that I'd suggest going back to standard 15" laptops. With the 13" you're paying a lot for the portability
$500 Asus Vivobook is pretty decent. i5 8250U, 8 gig of RAM, 1080p display, 1 TB HDD, under 4 pounds. Battery life is crap but you're not going to get everything for $500.
Durability, if you really want to throw it in the unpadded main compartment of a backpack, get a hard sleeve. Text books are the bane of laptops as you tend to forget you've got the laptop in there and damn if you're not going to make that stupid calculus book fit in.

It's actually Lenovo and they are good quality, right there with Dell. Lenovo used to be IBM. I've had one for about 8 years and it still works.
