So I have this marvellous little netbook - well loved. Unfortunately, it has some kind of defect that makes it hard for it to find wifi networks. Took it to the library - couldn't pickup their wifi to connect BUT the little phone and the teeny ipad could. Set up a second wifi router in the house - and it can't find that either unless I'm holding it right above the router. It picks up other wifi network signals from around it - apparently I'm guessing stronger for some reason - but not always the ones I'm looking to connect with. Is there a way to fix this? I don't know if its a replaceable part or a software issue. Please help my little netbook find its wifi networks!

Sorta sounds like the antenna isn't connected to the card to me. There's a little snap-connector that should attach a wire that runs (usually around the screen) to the actual wifi card itself. Sometimes on small devices, they are soldered together, or have a different kind of push connector that contains wires for other things too (speakers, for instance).

Only way to know is to physically open the device and look.

If you have a free USB port you could get one of these. Not the fastest but it's fast enough and it's tiny.

Depending on your netbook it may be difficult to get the part and replace it. You could disable it and use your own.

Return it. It's defective. Buy a Bluetooth adapter. The little stubby ones like gguerra posted generally work fine. They antenna is minuscule so they do have some range issues but generally you're not connecting to weak WiFi signals. If you're trying to use the library WiFi from your car in the parking lot, maybe that would be an issue.

Thanks - maybe I'll try this. Seems like the easiest solution.
