I want a small one/light one, ideally something similar size/design as Surface/iPad. It is for entertainment (watch youtube video, etc). I also want to suitable for office use (Word, Excel, programming, etc).

Surface: I have Surface for a few years, but I hate the hardware. Too many problems. One of biggest problems is "Plug in not charge", I search the problem, and many other people have the same problem. The other big problem is it shuts down randomly by itself sometimes, again, many other people complaint the problem online. I am tired of quality of hardware. There are some "solutions" posted online, but it does not fix my surface problems.

iPad: I have never bought one, it is more for entertainment purpose, such as watch movies. I guess it is not good for office use.

Any recommendation? I can go with traditional laptop, if it is light and small, and the hardware is reliable.

Thanks.

I hear the new Macbooks are fairly light. They did away with the CD-rom drive. My Macbook on the other hand is pretty heavy, but I've dropped it on the floor several times, it takes a licking and keeps ticking!
One thing is, they are not cheap, well over $1000.

By the way, I am not fan of Apple products, I would go with Window system, not macbook.

Ideally, no more than $500, since it is occasional use only. I cannot expect to use it more than 20 days per year. But if it is good, I can go above $500.

Many choices depending on what features and size you want. Just stay away from chromebooks, since they depend on the net for functionality.

You can go here for ideas: https://www.bestproducts.com/tech/ga...aptop-reviews/

I don't think there are any bad choices among major brands. The market is very competitive and weeds out the junk.

Note as you shop the tradeoffs among battery life, screen, weight and price.

Lenovo Miix 320. Discontinued but you can still get them through Amazon/Newegg and what not.

Under $300, iPad-sized, good battery life.

Go to:
https://www.techbargains.com/

About third of the way down the page is a great deal on a Dell laptop:
Dell Inspiron 15 7000 Core i5-8250U Quad-core 15.6" 1080p Laptop w/ Dual Storage) $599.99

There's a $50 off code. I have a similar Dell form factor laptop and it's great for travel.
I know it's $500 over but this has an SSD boot drive and is well worth the extra $100.
You WILL thanks me later.

This not small. It's not designed for travel. It's not light. It meets none of the OP's requirements? Otherwise a great suggestion.

You really should know me better then that by now, Bigbear.
If OP wants something the size of a Surface he should get a Surface Go.
If he wants a more powerful laptop that is great for traveling that one I posted is a solid choice.
I'm not just guessing here. I own that exact form factor laptop and it's fantastic.

Less then an inch think. Weighs 4 pounds. Insane battery life. Convertible; so it's a tablet on the plane and a real laptop at the hotel. If OP wants smaller still look for a 13" instead of the 15"

Look at that! There's a 13" version up today under OP's budget.

Only an i3 but good enough to run Word and watch YouTube.
