The connection was better before the other house got a new router, the cable company actually came by to install it. I have no idea what the specs are. (model/speed/capacity/etc.)

There are a lot of devices using the router. But service/performance had been much better, and I wasn't getting kicked off before this new one was put in couple of months ago.

I guess, I'll have to try to find out what the specs are for it.
Thanks all.

First of all, it may be a location problem with the router. The router should be located in a high area, second story if a 2 story house. It should be located nearest you as convenient for them.

Second, you can get an external WiFi adapter and a high gain directional antenna. Jack it in a USB port and aim the antenna.

Thirdly, thinking out of the box, buy a second router and jack it into their router (in effect a sub-router) and attach a directional antenna aimed at your house.

And finally, do both the sub-router directional antenna on their end, and the external WiFi with directional antenna on your end.

There is no way the final solution won't work unless you are more than 100-200 meters or yards from them.

Oh, forgot to add, it could be a hardware problem on your computer. Maybe your WiFi is going out or weak. You can fix this with an external WiFi adapter.

Basically they work by receiving your wifi signal and rebroadcasting it. You set it up by connecting it to your existing wifi and then set up its own wifi. You'll then connect your device to this new wifi. You probably wouldn't want it right next to you too because you don't want it receiving a weak signal. Set it closer to your router but still close enough to you to get a strong signal.

They aren't without their problems though. It'll inherit all the issues of wifi and increased latency, which is bad for online gaming.

Thanks. I understand most of that.
I'm in my living room. And the router is in my brother's dining room, across the street.
I just want a signal that won't get bumped off often.

He has his router where it's convenient for him. And I'm not going to ask him to move it.
There are a lot of devices on, or using this router network -- 8 people at his house, and me across the street.

I'll just keep looking at possible solutions.

Has/can/would your brother set his router's signal strength to maximum?

Good speed is not inconsistent with a good connection. Interference can knock off a weaker signal if the interference is stronger.

Are there any Amazon Alexa devices in the mix?

^^ He has an Echo. It could be "plugged in"but I haven't seen him use it in a while. I can ask him about it, though.
I take it the Echo could weaken the signal that's coming my way?

One Echo will probably not make a difference. My house is full up Alexa and my network suffers routine crashes, I need to reboot both modem and router. However that hasn't happened in a week to 10 days.

Few people have as many tech toys as me. Retired BSEE, wealthy, the only difference between men and boys is the cost of their toys.

I walk around my home and tell electronic stuff to do sh***** and it happens. "Alexa, turn on coffee" when I wake in the morning. "Alexa, turn off bedroom lamp" at night when I close my e-book. "Alexa, decrease A/C 2 degrees" if it's hot. "Alexa, show street" if I hear noises in front of my house. "Alexa, turn on fireplace. Alexa, play Kesha Animal Cannibal on Den. Alexa, where is my stuff? Alexa, tell me Amazon stock. Alexa, call 805-555-1212." You get the idea.

Nobody has more NAS than me. (19 TB) Few have more Alexa devices than me. "Alexa, turn on porch light." "Alexa, what is the meaning of life?" That last one is fun. I love to eff with Alexa by asking ridiculous questions! Don't bother cursing Alexa out. She handles all negs in a diplomatic way.

But yes, Alexa can mess up your network. I've been intending to start a topic on that.
