First; create a folder, the when it asks about naming the folder; press Alt and 0160 at the same time.
Then go to the folder properties and chose customize, down the icon you will find "change icon" press it and among the shapes you will find an empty spaces, chose one and it’s done.

At least it is something you can do without using any program!
Why not just right click, select properties, and select the hidden option? Your method will return files in the folder in search results and so forth, my method will not.

I have everything visible on my machine, even "hidden" files. I have to access some them from time to time for CAD management stuffs.
