I am purchasing an Asus laptop for under $300. I don’t know if I need to purchase the extended warranty which is about $200 for two years and covers internal and external issues. Or do I just buy the minimal one. It comes with a warranty from Asus but if there’s a problem I have to send it to ASUS whereas with the other warranties I can take it to the geek squad at Best Buy. It seems kind of ridiculous to pay $200 for an inexpensive computer like this. Any advice?
Thanks! I’m basically only going to use it for Internet and watching DVDs. But I will back up my files if I have any. That was my feeling too - if it breaks just get a new one since it’s pretty inexpensive. I don’t think I made this clear but there’s also a warranty I could purchase I think for about $40 for a year for just external issues I think. Sorry I don’t remember the details now but I just wonder if most people would buy an additional warranty besides the one that is included in the price. If you have any thoughts on that let me know. Thank you!
I would agree with the others as far as that $200 warranty.
Also, regardless of what device you might purchase, double-check how any extended warranty for that item will work. Some take effect after the manufacturer's warranty concludes (as you mentioned), which means you would still need to send the item in (possibly shipped at your expense) if still under the manufacturer's warranty. If the store's warranty is different, they should clearly state this in writing. If not, ask where you can see details of the warranty that you can save and print for your records. A lot of extended warranties generate extra income for store employees, so it wouldn't be uncommon for someone selling them to fudge the details a bit to get an add-on sale.
As far as the warranty for 'external issues' - it would depend on what it actually covers, and, once again, when it takes effect.
Just curious - is this a brand new or remanufactured unit?
Thanks for the info! It’s a new device. They have to order it so I haven’t gotten it yet but when I go in to pick it up I’ll get the details and try and make a good decision.
I wouldn't spend any extra money on a $300 laptop. Don't get even the $40 warranty.
