The last time I operated my web cam to communicate with family across country, they could see and hear me, but I could only see them. In order to communicate, we had to type our messages and responses. At that time we were using I think MSN Messaging or something like that. Can anyone suggest who or what to use so that all three cameras work the same and everyone can see and hear each other? Also from past experience, I missed most video connections because I didn't know the other person was online. Is there some way that I can instruct the computer to notify me when someone is trying to contact me by video? You know, you see it all the time on TV when someone walks into the room and his/her computer beeps or something and they hit a key and presto, aunt Mildred is on screen saying howdy!
If you could not hear them, odds are they have a setting wrong for the microphone on their computer, either the wrong audio imput (mic) or some setting like that. could be as simple as the mic is not plugged in or is mutted in sound pannel.
As for knowing when someone is on or trying to contact you, I would expect you have to be logged into your software, like windows live messenger, this program will beep and notify when someone signs in and alert you if someone starts a conversation.

Thanks Arcticthaw! Windows live Messenger is in fact the program we were using. I will take your advise and pass it along. I was hoping for another better program suggestion though, maybe I just need to learn more about Messenger. As for notification, I was thinking of something similar to Google Gmail in that all you have to do is have the computer on and it will notify you. Anyway, thanks again!
I am sure there are options in live messenger to do what you want, as the girlfriends machine does that, but she is logged in all the time. I have been having issues with Messenger lately, sometimes the network slows to the point our video and audio stops or we get disconnected. My favorite is when all of a sudden we get this horrible screeching during video, and have to cancel the call and reconnect. Happens on two diffierent computers on this end so not sure what the problem is. I haven't tried skype or any of the others.

Thanks Arcticthaw, I'll do some better research in Messenger and see if I can make it work differently. I had your problem once back when I had dial-up, but today with high speed I may not. Time will tell, though when I get around to hookin' her back up. Good luck with that!
